Job Description

About the Role

Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS) is seeking to appoint a Senior Medical Statistician to serve as Director of the Brighton and Sussex Clinical Trials Unit (CTU). The appointment will be made at Associate Professor or Professor level, depending on experience.

The Brighton and Sussex Clinical Trials Unit (CTU) is a UK Clinical Research Collaboration (UKCRC) registered unit, co-located with the Department of Primary Care and Public Health at BSMS. The CTU conducts high-quality UK-based clinical trials and studies across a wide range of medical and health-related fields — including drug and device trials, psychological and behavioural interventions, and digital health research.

This is a unique leadership opportunity to direct the only UKCRC-registered CTU in Kent, Surrey, and Sussex, driving its continued growth and fostering collaborations across academia, the NHS, and industry to deliver world-class clinical research.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic and academic leadership for the Brighton and Sussex CTU, ensuring excellence in clinical trials and research delivery.
  • Lead your own high-quality research programme in medical statistics and clinical trials methodology.
  • Oversee and mentor a team of statisticians working on CTU and wider BSMS research projects.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Operations, Trial Managers, and Data Management teams to ensure effective CTU operations.
  • Represent the CTU nationally, including at the UKCRC Statisticians’ Network meetings.
  • Build and maintain partnerships with NHS Trusts, universities, and industry collaborators.
  • Contribute to research-led teaching and curriculum development at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, particularly in medical statistics.
  • Support and mentor early-career academics and researchers.
  • At Professorial level, you will demonstrate sustained international recognition, excellence in research, and proven leadership in education, research innovation, and institutional strategy.

About You

The successful candidate will be an experienced Medical Statistician or Clinical Trials Methodologist with a strong record in clinical trials research and leadership.

You should demonstrate:

  • A proven track record of designing, leading, and analysing clinical trials.
  • Experience in leading research teams and managing multidisciplinary collaborations.
  • A strong portfolio of peer-reviewed publications and research grants.
  • Expertise in teaching, supervising, and mentoring students and staff.
  • A collaborative approach to academic and clinical partnerships.
  • Candidates at Professorial level must show national and international standing in their field, with evidence of exceptional and sustained research achievement.
