Role Overview
University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is offering an exciting opportunity for a Clinical Fellow in Paediatric Cardiology at middle-grade (ST4+ / registrar-equivalent) level. This role is ideal for doctors seeking to deepen their experience in paediatric cardiology while delivering high-quality, compassionate care to children and young people with congenital and acquired heart disease.
You will join a forward-thinking, multidisciplinary paediatric cardiology team within a nationally recognised congenital cardiac centre, with strong clinical supervision, structured educational support, and encouragement to participate in teaching, audit, and research.
About the Service
The Paediatric Cardiology Unit at UHS is a Level 1 Congenital Cardiothoracic Centre and part of the Oxford–Southampton Congenital Cardiac Network. The service provides comprehensive cardiac care across the lifespan, including:
- Fetal cardiology
- Neonatal and infant cardiac care
- Paediatric congenital heart disease
- Adult congenital heart disease
As one of the few fully co-located congenital cardiac services in the UK, the unit works closely with paediatric intensive care, neonatal intensive care, adult congenital cardiology, and regional paediatric specialties—offering excellent exposure to complex, collaborative care.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Care
- Provide middle-grade medical cover for the paediatric cardiology ward
- Participate in outpatient cardiology clinics
Contribute to inpatient care across:
- Paediatric Cardiology Ward
- Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)
- Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
- General paediatric wards
- Participate in a 1 in 9 on-call rota, including out-of-hours work, fully compliant with the New Deal
Diagnostic & Procedural Skills
- Undertake clinical assessment and decision-making for children with cardiac conditions
- Perform echocardiographic assessments as required, with structured training and supervision provided
- Maintain safe practice in paediatric emergency care
Education, Audit & Research
- Attend and contribute to multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings
- Engage in departmental teaching and educational activities
- Participate in audit, quality improvement, and research, according to interest and experience
Training, Supervision & Development
- You will be allocated a named Educational Supervisor at the start of the post
- The role provides an educational framework equivalent to training-grade doctors
- Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and study leave are actively supported
- Experience gained is suitable for doctors preparing for specialty training, credentialing, or overseas fellowship progression

Essential Person Criteria
Qualifications & Registration
- MBBS (or equivalent medical qualification)
- Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
- MRCPCH (or equivalent postgraduate paediatric qualification)
Experience & Knowledge
- Registrar-level experience in general paediatrics
- Experience in neonatal care
- Sound clinical judgement and ability to manage paediatric emergencies
- Demonstrated interest in paediatric cardiology
Skills & Professional Attributes
- Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams
- Strong verbal and written communication skills in English
- Competence in common paediatric procedures (e.g. IV cannulation)
- Understanding of equality, diversity, and patient-centred care
- Participation in teaching and audit activities
Desirable Criteria
- Previous experience in a paediatric cardiology unit
- Ability to perform or prior exposure to echocardiography
- Evidence of audit, research, or quality improvement work
- Interest in developing leadership or management skills
Salary & Contractual Information
- Appointment under Trust terms and conditions for non-training fellows
- Salary aligned to National Medical and Dental pay scales, based on experience
- Additional remuneration for out-of-hours work, weekends, and enhanced hours as applicable
