Role Overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Upper Gastrointestinal (Upper GI) Cancer Team at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre as a Band 7 Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) on a fixed-term secondment covering maternity leave.
In this advanced specialist role, you will provide expert clinical advice, holistic support, and continuity of care for patients diagnosed with Upper GI cancers. You will work closely with consultants and the wider multidisciplinary team, delivering nurse-led services while supporting patients and carers throughout the cancer pathway.
The post is primarily based in Liverpool, with regular travel across the Trust’s network sites, including the Wirral.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as a specialist clinical resource for patients with Upper GI cancer and their carers
- Provide advanced physical, psychological, and psychosocial assessment throughout the care pathway
- Deliver nurse-led clinics and contribute to service development initiatives
- Support and educate clinical and non-clinical staff across the Trust
- Coordinate patient admissions for complications or supportive therapies using agreed protocols
- Actively participate in Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) meetings, contributing to clinical decision-making
- Develop innovative patient pathways that improve efficiency, reduce clinic waiting times, and enhance follow-up processes
- Promote and maintain high standards of safe, evidence-based practice
- Support audit, service evaluation, and research activity within the specialist area

Qualifications
Essential
- Registered General Nurse with current UK professional registration
- Degree in a healthcare-related subject
- Evidence of Master’s level study
- Post-registration qualification in cancer, palliative care, or a relevant specialist area
- Advanced Communication Skills training (or willingness to undertake)
- Demonstrable leadership experience
Desirable
- Psychological skills training (Level 2 or above)
- MSc Clinical Examination
- MSc Research qualification
Knowledge & Expertise
Essential
- Strong understanding of evidence-based practice and research implementation
- In-depth knowledge of national cancer standards and policies
- Ongoing commitment to continuing professional development
Experience
Essential
- Post-registration experience at Band 6 or above within cancer care, palliative care, or Upper GI speciality
- Experience teaching and supporting staff
- Advanced specialist clinical experience
- Leadership and service development experience
- Proven ability to work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams
- Evidence of advanced communication skills and ability to influence change
Desirable
- Experience working as a Clinical Nurse Specialist
- Holistic Needs Assessment (HNA) training and practice
- Experience in audit, research, or policy development
- Understanding of the role of Macmillan Cancer Support within UK cancer services
