Head of Research Finance and Contracts
Location: Brighton, UK
Hours: Full-time (up to 1.0 FTE / 37.5 hours per week). Flexible working requests will be considered, subject to business needs.
Salary: Grade 9, £57,422 – £66,537 per annum (pro rata if part-time)
Contract Type: Permanent

About the Role

The University of Sussex is seeking a dynamic and experienced individual to take on the strategic leadership role of Head of Research Finance and Contracts. This key position is responsible for ensuring the provision of high-quality post-award financial and contractual support across the University’s research and innovation portfolio.

You will lead a team that manages all financial and legal aspects of awarded grants and contracts, ensuring compliance with funder requirements and supporting the successful delivery of research outcomes. Your work will involve:

  • Leading research income forecasting and financial planning
  • Overseeing financial and statutory reporting for research projects
  • Providing expert guidance on compliance with funder terms and conditions
  • Supporting research teams in maximising the value and impact of awarded funding

You will play a pivotal role in the Research and Innovation Services (RIS) leadership team, working in close collaboration with heads across the division to achieve strategic objectives.

About You

We are looking for an experienced leader with:

  • A strong track record in research finance administration and system leadership
  • In-depth knowledge of major UK and EU research funder terms, legal contracts, and IP frameworks
  • Experience managing large, multidisciplinary teams and complex stakeholder relationships
  • Strategic thinking, a collaborative leadership style, and a commitment to delivering service excellence
  • A sound understanding of the national and international research funding landscape

Your ability to drive change, build strong internal and external partnerships, and lead the continuous improvement of financial and contractual support services will be key to your success in this role.
