Why Join Change Grow Live?
Change Grow Live is a health and social care charity supporting individuals in challenging circumstances, including those impacted by drug and alcohol use, mental health issues, and domestic violence. As the largest charity of its kind in the UK, we assist tens of thousands of individuals on their personal journeys to recovery. Our diverse team of dedicated professionals plays a critical role in supporting some of society’s most vulnerable people. Some of our services include:

  • Needle exchange programs (both in-person and anonymous)
  • Blood-borne virus screening
  • Fentanyl and nitazene drug testing
  • Prescribing safer opioid alternatives to reduce harm
  • Collaborating with pharmacies to ensure clients receive life-saving medication
  • Specialized caseworkers for children and young people

About the Role
Our in-house web application has evolved over 15 years to serve as an electronic patient record, case management system, and quality management tool, among others. It started with a Perl application and has grown considerably since. The software is deployed using Docker containers and ECS, with a serverless, auto-scaling MySQL database.

Current Tech Stack: Newer work is primarily written in TypeScript, using NestJS and SvelteKit, with comprehensive end-to-end, integration, and unit testing across both languages.

Culture: We practice a blame-free culture, focusing on improving processes rather than assigning individual fault.

We are looking for compassionate, bold, and open-minded software developers who are excited to contribute to this vital mission. Your work will empower frontline professionals to deliver life-saving services to those who need them most.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the development of our in-house web application, improving its functionality, security, and user experience.
  • Write efficient and maintainable code, often focusing on SQL queries, debugging, and testing in various languages.
  • Improve legacy code, documenting and enhancing features while understanding the original solution’s limitations.
  • Ensure software security is a top priority, with a focus on making systems safe for vulnerable users.
  • Collaborate in a generalist team environment, jumping from CSS to AWS infrastructure and more, fostering continuous learning.
  • Work on various stages of software development, from backend systems to frontend design and infrastructure.
  • Participate in a supportive, team-oriented environment with a focus on learning and growth.

About You

  • We’re looking for someone with the following skills and experience:
  • Familiarity with SQL for frequent querying and data management.
  • Strong knowledge of HTML and CSS fundamentals, with experience building applications using JavaScript in the browser.
  • Debugging and testing experience in any language – this is a highly transferable skill.
  • Experience with Perl is not required; we’re happy to train you.
  • A strong understanding of security principles and an eagerness to discuss and implement best practices.
  • An interest in diving into legacy code, understanding its structure, and improving it.
  • A curious, generalist mindset, ready to learn and contribute across different areas of the tech stack.
