About the Role

We are pleased to offer an exciting opportunity for a Specialty Doctor to join our Community Older Persons’ Mental Health (OPMH) Service in Portsmouth. This is a newly created 8 PA post, designed to strengthen senior clinical leadership within a well-established and supportive community service.

You will work closely with experienced Consultant Psychiatrists and a skilled multidisciplinary team, providing high-quality psychiatric care to older adults living in the community. The role offers a balance of independent clinical practice, collaborative working, and the opportunity to influence service development.

This post is well suited to a motivated clinician who values continuity of care, recovery-focused practice, and strong partnership working across community and inpatient services.

What You’ll Be Doing

As a senior clinician within the community OPMH service, you will:

  • Carry out independent psychiatric assessments in community settings
  • Deliver outpatient clinics and undertake home visits
  • Manage a defined caseload of older adults with complex mental health needs
  • Provide supervision and clinical guidance to junior doctors and senior nursing staff
  • Chair multidisciplinary team meetings, CPA reviews, and Best Interest meetings
  • Develop and review treatment plans, including risk assessment and safeguarding
  • Support seamless pathways between community and inpatient mental health services
  • Maintain high-quality clinical documentation and contribute to governance processes
  • Participate in audit, quality improvement, and service development initiatives
  • Strong communication skills, sound clinical judgement, and the ability to work collaboratively are essential to this role.

Out of Hours Work

As service needs evolve, there may be an expectation to contribute to the out-of-hours rota. This is not currently included in the job plan, but applicants who are willing and able to participate in out-of-hours work are strongly encouraged to apply.

Person Specification

Essential Qualifications & Experience

  • Full GMC registration
  • MBBS or recognised equivalent

For Specialty Doctor grade:

For Specialist Grade applicants:

  • Minimum of 12 years post-qualification experience, including at least 6 years in psychiatry
  • Experience of working effectively within multidisciplinary teams
  • Commitment to collaborative, recovery-focused practice
  • Evidence of contributing to service delivery and clinical decision-making

Desirable

  • MRCPsych
  • Section 12(2) approval (or willingness to work towards this)
