About the Role

The University of Reading is seeking an experienced Senior Technician to support teaching and research within its internationally recognised Department of Meteorology. This role offers a unique opportunity to work at the forefront of atmospheric, oceanic, and climate science, supporting one of the world’s leading centres for meteorological research and education.

You will join a close-knit and highly skilled technical team within Technical Services, working closely with academic staff and students to ensure the smooth operation of laboratories, observatories, and field-based teaching activities.

Your Working Environment

Based at Earley Gate, you will support a range of specialist facilities, including the Reading University Atmospheric Observatory (RUAO) a globally significant site that has provided near-continuous meteorological measurements since 1901.

The Department of Meteorology forms part of the School of Mathematical, Physical & Computational Sciences (SMPCS) and is internationally respected for its contribution to climate science, weather forecasting, and environmental research.

Key Responsibilities

As a Senior Technician, you will:

  • Test, deploy, and maintain meteorological instruments and data logging systems
  • Coordinate servicing and repairs by liaising with external suppliers and service engineers
  • Maintain teaching laboratories, including equipment care, consumables, stock control, waste management, and housekeeping
  • Deliver training and demonstrations on meteorological instrumentation and data systems
  • Provide technical support for off-campus field classes and outreach activities
  • Share responsibility for maintaining the RUAO grounds and facilities
  • Contribute to a rota providing daily meteorological observations

Skills, Experience & Qualifications

You should bring:

A qualification equivalent to HNC / NVQ Level 3 / AS- or A-Level in a science, mathematics, or engineering discipline
Or a relevant degree (e.g. Physical Geography, Physics, Environmental Science) with strong practical experience
Hands-on knowledge of automated field sensors, remote monitoring, and data logging systems
Experience in electronics workshops, including Arduino and Raspberry Pi applications
Working knowledge of Python and VBA
Practical fieldwork experience and confidence working outdoors

Interview Process

Interviews will take place during the week commencing 16 February 2026
Candidates will receive a guided tour of the meteorological laboratories and facilities on the day of interview.
