About the Role

The University of Sussex is seeking a Senior Strategic Business Partner to lead the delivery of strategic financial services that support business development initiatives and ensure the successful delivery of the University’s Strategy 2035.

This senior role provides expert financial advice to the University Executive, helping to shape financial strategy and planning. You will:

Identify and assess strategic business opportunities.

Work with Directors and business leads to develop proposals for Executive consideration.

Deliver robust and sustainable business plans for new and existing initiatives.

Support income-generating activities and services linked to the University’s core education and research mission.

You will partner with senior leaders across Professional Services and Academic Faculties, collaborating closely with other Senior Finance Business Partners to strengthen financial decision-making, performance, and literacy across the University.

About You

We are looking for a strategic thinker with:

Strong financial and business acumen.

Proven experience in developing financial strategies, models, and business cases.

Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to present complex financial information in a clear, accessible way for non-financial audiences.

Strong communication skills and the ability to build effective relationships at senior levels.

A collaborative, team-oriented approach, valuing partnership working and shared success.

Experience using reporting tools and data-driven decision-making processes.

About the Finance Division

The Finance Division, led by the Chief Financial Officer, employs around 80 staff and plays a key role in both day-to-day operations and delivery of the University’s strategic aims.

We work in partnership with academic and professional colleagues to:

Provide high-quality financial and commercial services.

Support efficient systems and processes.

Identify and exploit strategic and commercial opportunities.

Manage financial risk.

Build capability and confidence in financial management across the University.
