About the Role

We are looking for a knowledgeable and detail-focused Senior Research Finance Officer to support the financial management of a diverse portfolio of externally funded research projects across the University.

In this role, you will oversee the full post-award lifecycle, from project set-up through to closure, including financial reporting, monitoring, and audit preparation. Acting as a trusted adviser, you will provide expert guidance to academic staff and professional services colleagues, ensuring all activity aligns with funder regulations and University financial policies.

While prior experience within higher education or research finance is advantageous, it is not essential. Candidates with strong transferable skills in areas such as project accounting, financial compliance, or stakeholder-facing finance roles are strongly encouraged to apply.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage post-award finances for a portfolio of research grants and contracts
  • Ensure accurate financial reporting in line with funder and institutional requirements
  • Provide clear, practical financial advice to academics and professional colleagues
  • Support audits, reconciliations, and project closures
  • Monitor expenditure, forecast budgets, and identify financial risks
  • Build effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of financial processes and controls

About You

You will be an organised and analytical finance professional with experience in project-based financial management, ideally within a complex or regulated environment.

You will bring:

  • A solid understanding of accounting principles and financial controls
  • Strong IT and data-handling skills, with confidence using financial systems
  • The ability to communicate financial information clearly to non-finance colleagues
  • Excellent organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities
  • A collaborative approach, with confidence providing constructive financial guidance
