Job Description

The Role at a Glance

The University of Sussex is looking for a skilled and motivated Senior Research Finance Officer to join our Research and Innovation Division on a fixed-term basis.

In this role, you will take ownership of the post-award financial management of a varied portfolio of research projects. From initial project set-up through to closure and audit, you will ensure that funding is managed accurately, transparently, and in line with both funder conditions and University policies.

You will act as a trusted source of expert financial advice, working closely with academic staff and professional colleagues to support informed decision-making and strong financial governance across the research lifecycle.

While experience within higher education is welcomed, it is not essential. Candidates from other sectors with strong transferable skills particularly in project accounting, financial control, or stakeholder engagement—are strongly encouraged to apply.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage post-award finances for multiple research projects, from initiation to close-down
  • Ensure compliance with external funder requirements, audit standards, and internal financial policies
  • Provide clear, practical financial guidance to academics and professional services colleagues
  • Monitor project spend, forecasts, and variances to support effective budget management
  • Support audits and financial reporting requirements related to research funding
  • Build strong working relationships across departments to enable successful project delivery

About You

You will bring experience in project-based financial management, supported by a solid understanding of accounting principles. You are confident using financial systems and digital tools, and you communicate complex financial information clearly and constructively.

Highly organised and proactive, you are comfortable managing a diverse workload and prioritising competing deadlines. You enjoy working collaboratively and are confident offering pragmatic advice that helps colleagues make informed financial decisions.
