About the Department
The Research Department of Primary Care and Population Health (PCPH) forms part of UCL’s Institute of Epidemiology and Health Care and is jointly led by Professor Kate Walters and Professor Greta Rait.

The NIHR Research Support Service (RSS)
This role sits within the NIHR Research Support Service (RSS) — a national infrastructure designed to support the development of high-quality applied health and social care research.
The RSS Hub is jointly delivered by:
- University College London
- Imperial College London
- King’s College London
- Queen Mary University of London
The postholder will contribute to the NIHR RSS Specialist Service for Industry, helping innovators navigate research design, regulation, funding, and translation into practice.
The Role
We are seeking a Senior Research Fellow (Translational Research Adviser) to play a pivotal advisory role at the interface between research, innovation, and implementation.
You will support industry partners, SMEs, clinicians, and academics working across health technologies, medical devices, and life sciences. Your focus will be on helping innovative ideas mature into fundable, deliverable, and impactful applied research.
This role is ideally suited to someone who enjoys consultancy-style work, thrives in multidisciplinary environments, and is motivated by translating research into tangible health and social care benefits.
Key Responsibilities
 Translational & Methodological Advice
- Provide expert guidance on translational research design, quantitative methods, and evaluation strategies
- Advise on regulatory, governance, and ethical considerations
 Industry & SME Engagement
- Work directly with SMEs and industry partners to shape applied research proposals
- Support routes from innovation to clinical or service implementation
 Funding & Strategy
- Support the development and review of competitive funding applications
- Advise on NIHR and wider UK funding pathways
 Collaboration & Impact
- Work across institutions within the RSS Hub
- Contribute to strengthening research capacity across health and social care sectors
- Health Research Authority (HRA) guidance
About You
You will bring:
 Academic & Research Background
- A PhD (or equivalent experience) in applied health research, social care research, or a related discipline
- Strong expertise in translational research and quantitative methodologies
 Professional Expertise
- Experience developing or critically reviewing research funding applications
- Clear understanding of research governance, regulation, and innovation pathways
 Communication & Consultancy Skills
- Ability to engage confidently with SMEs, clinicians, academics, and innovators
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
 Ways of Working
- Highly organised, collaborative, and comfortable working across disciplines
- Motivated by supporting others to turn ideas into impactful research
