Job Description
About the Role
The Sussex Energy Group, within the Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU) at the University of Sussex Business School, is seeking a Senior Research Fellow in Circular Economy, Material and Energy Use to work with Professor Matthew Lockwood.
This post is part of the Production and Consumption Transformation (PACT) research centre, a new initiative jointly funded by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ).
In this role, you will lead research on the institutional, political economy, policy, and regulatory challenges and opportunities for reducing material throughput and energy use in production systems through circular economy strategies and other sustainable approaches. The research will focus on key industrial sectors such as automotive manufacturing and construction.
The PACT Centre aims to align the UK’s industrial strategy and resource consumption policies with national climate targets. With DESNZ funding 35% of the project, you will collaborate directly with UK policymakers, delivering actionable research insights that can inform and shape real policy change. You will also work with leading researchers across Lancaster, Leeds, and Sussex universities.
About You
You should hold a PhD (or equivalent experience) in a relevant discipline such as geography, economics, political science, innovation studies, or sustainability transitions, with a strong focus on political economy, policy, regulation, or business models related to the circular economy and the reduction of material and energy use in production.
Essential skills and experience include:
The ability to work independently and develop a strong research agenda.
Strong analytical and theoretical grounding in governance, institutions, and policy within industry.
Experience in qualitative research methods, including fieldwork, interviewing, and data management.
Evidence of effective communication skills with academic, policy, and non-academic audiences.
This position offers a unique opportunity to influence UK policy and industrial practices while contributing to a collaborative, high-impact research programme.
