About the role

University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Senior Assistant Technical Officer to join its Sterile Services team. This is a key operational role within the Trust’s decontamination services, supporting the safe and timely supply of sterile instruments and equipment used across operating theatres and clinical areas.

You will work across all Trust decontamination facilities and play an important supervisory role, supporting technicians, maintaining quality standards, and ensuring regulatory and accreditation requirements are consistently met. This post requires flexibility, attention to detail, and a strong commitment to patient safety.

Key responsibilities

As a Senior Assistant Technical Officer, you will:

  • Work across all areas of the sterile services and decontamination function
  • Supervise staff in designated areas, providing guidance, support, and on-the-job training
  • Monitor technician performance, dress code compliance, and adherence to Trust procedures
  • Take responsibility for final product release, ensuring all items meet required quality standards
  • Inspect, assemble, and prepare surgical instruments according to agreed specifications
  • Decontaminate, replace, or arrange repair of equipment used in theatres and clinical settings
  • Ensure products are supplied in the correct quantities, condition, and level of cleanliness
  • Maintain delivery schedules to support clinical activity
  • Carry out daily and weekly testing regimes in line with regulatory requirements
  • Conduct stock audits, including sterility checks and expiry date monitoring
  • Liaise with clinical teams, providing customer service and support visits where required
  • Participate in the on-call rota for both departments
  • Support the maintenance of ISO 9001 and ISO 13485 accreditation

Qualifications and knowledge

Essential:

  • Five GCSEs/O Levels (or equivalent experience)
  • Understanding of quality-controlled production environments

Desirable:

  • Full or associate membership of the Institute of Decontamination Sciences (IDSc)
  • Experience working within a Quality Management System (QMS)
  • Internal auditor qualification

Experience

Essential:

  • Experience producing high-quality products within defined performance criteria

Desirable:

  • Experience working within the NHS
  • Experience in a sterile services or decontamination facility
