Job Description

About the Role

We are seeking a Research Technician in Protein Biochemistry to join a Blood Cancer UK-funded project within the Genome Damage and Stability Centre at the University of Sussex.

This project aims to investigate how tyrosine fusion kinases activate cancer signaling pathways in leukemia and how they are regulated by the HSP90 molecular chaperone system.

Your responsibilities will include:

Large-scale recombinant protein production in support of structural biology studies (X-ray crystallography and cryoEM).

Performing biochemical and biophysical assays to study fusion kinase assembly, activity, and interactions with the chaperone system.

Supporting research into new allosteric approaches to inhibit fusion kinase function.

You will be part of a highly collaborative team in the School of Life Sciences and will have opportunities to further develop technical skills and career experience in a world-leading research environment.

About You

The ideal candidate will have:

A BSc (and preferably MSc) in Structural Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or a related discipline.

Hands-on experience with large-scale recombinant protein expression in bacterial or insect cells, and subsequent purification techniques.

Practical skills in biochemical and/or biophysical assays (e.g., protein-protein interactions, enzymatic activity) – desirable but not essential.

You should be motivated, organised, and able to work independently as well as collaboratively in a multidisciplinary research team. Strong communication skills (written and oral) and enthusiasm for contributing to scientific discussions are essential.
