Job Description

About the Role

We are seeking a Research Scientist to join the National Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS), based in the world-leading Department of Meteorology at the University of Reading.

This exciting role will focus on advancing our understanding of the regional climate impacts of Marine Cloud Brightening (MCB) and developing deployment strategies that achieve global cooling while minimizing harmful regional effects.

You will use coupled-climate modelling to analyse atmospheric and oceanic responses, identify robust detection metrics, and provide insights into how MCB could be applied responsibly as a potential climate intervention.

Key Responsibilities

Analyse the dynamical responses to MCB deployment and assess impacts on regional temperature, precipitation, circulation, and monsoons.

Perform coupled-climate model simulations to evaluate optimal deployment strategies and identify those that should be avoided.

Assess the time of emergence of the MCB signal and propose reliable metrics to detect whether MCB is functioning as intended.

Investigate the linearity and interactions of teleconnections from single and multiple deployment regions in shaping climate responses.

About You

You will be a motivated scientist with expertise in climate modelling and climate dynamics. You should bring:

Experience in numerical modelling of the climate system.

Strong analytical skills in interpreting model outputs.

Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary research environment.

Excellent communication skills, with a track record of research publication and presentation.

About Us

The Department of Meteorology at Reading is internationally recognised for pioneering research in weather, climate, and Earth observations, with 100% of its research graded as world-leading or internationally excellent in REF2021.

NCAS is a NERC research centre distributed across UK universities and provides world-leading expertise in climate variability and change.
