Job Description

About the Role

The University of Reading is looking for a motivated Research Scientist to investigate regional climate responses to Marine Cloud Brightening (MCB) and design deployment strategies that achieve global cooling while reducing harmful regional impacts.

This post will be based within the National Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS), located in the Department of Meteorology at Reading. The Department is internationally recognized for pioneering work in weather, climate, and earth observation, with 100% of its research rated world-leading or internationally excellent in REF2021.

NCAS is a distributed NERC research center, and at Reading it hosts world-class expertise on climate variability and change.

Key Responsibilities

Analyze the dynamical responses to MCB, including effects on regional temperature, rainfall, circulation, and monsoon systems.

Run and evaluate coupled-climate model simulations to identify optimal MCB deployment strategies that minimise unintended impacts, and highlight approaches that should be avoided.

Assess the time of emergence of MCB signals and establish robust detection metrics to confirm whether MCB is performing as intended.

Investigate teleconnections from individual and combined MCB regions and assess their interaction in shaping regional climate responses.

About You

We are seeking a candidate with:

Strong background in climate science, atmospheric modelling, or related fields.

Experience with coupled-climate model simulations and data analysis.

Ability to interpret and communicate complex scientific results to diverse audiences.

Motivation to contribute to cutting-edge research addressing global climate challenges.
