Job Description

About the Role

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join the ERC-funded project HDPER – High-Dimensional Probability in Ergodic Theory and Representation Theory, led by Professor Tim Austin (Regius Professor of Mathematics).

The project will begin in January 2026 and initially runs for two years, with the possibility of extension for up to four years total.

This research sits at the intersection of Ergodic Theory, High-Dimensional Probability, Random Matrix Theory, and Operator Algebras. It aims to explore new connections between these areas, particularly through analogies between entropy in non-amenable group ergodic theory and in operator algebra representation theory.

You will be encouraged to develop your own complementary expertise during the post, while contributing to specific research problems aligned with your background.

You will be based in the Warwick Mathematics Institute, a world-leading department with a collaborative and inclusive research environment. The role also offers opportunities for international research visits, conference participation, and career development support.

About You

You will hold (or be close to submitting) a PhD in Mathematics in an area closely related to at least one of the project’s themes.

Experience in more than one of the relevant fields is desirable but not essential.

You should have a strong research track record, including published or accepted papers in reputable journals.

Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to explain your work to mathematicians outside your field.

High levels of originality, creativity, and independent research ability, along with strong time-management skills.

Note: If you have not yet been awarded your PhD at the start date, you will initially be appointed as Research Assistant (Grade 5, £34,610 per annum). Upon successful completion of your PhD, you will be promoted to Research Fellow (Grade 6, £35,608 per annum).
