Job Description

About the Department

The Department of Neuromuscular Diseases at UCL is a leading centre for clinical and scientific excellence in spinal cord and neuromuscular research. Our multidisciplinary teams work across basic science, genetics, and clinical research to understand disease mechanisms and develop novel treatments for neuromuscular disorders.

The Fratta/Keuss Laboratory, based within the department, focuses specifically on motor neuron diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Using models like iPSC-derived neurons, postmortem patient tissue, and mouse models, the lab investigates RNA processing dysfunction and therapeutic strategies to reverse disease progression.

About the Role

We are looking for a Research Fellow to join the Fratta/Keuss Laboratory to support a project investigating RNA-binding protein dysfunction in ALS, particularly the misvocalization of TDP-43 and its downstream effects on RNA splicing.

The potholder will use cutting-edge techniques in cell and molecular biology to explore new therapeutic avenues. You will work with established cell lines and iPSC-derived motor neurons, performing transcriptomic profiling and testing experimental interventions.

This research is part of a collaborative project with Dr Ariana Gatt (UCL) and Dr Jack Humphrey (Icahn School of Medicine, Mount Sinai, USA), providing an exciting opportunity to engage in a well-connected, international research environment.

This position is funded by the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation for an initial period of one year and is available for immediate start.

Key Responsibilities

Conduct experiments using iPSC-derived neurons, cell lines, and molecular biology techniques

Prepare libraries for RNA sequencing and analyze high-throughput transcriptomic data

Apply CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing to investigate molecular mechanisms

Collaborate with internal and international project partners

Maintain accurate and detailed records of experiments

Contribute to scientific publications and present findings at meetings

About You

Essential Requirements:

A PhD in Molecular Biology, Neuroscience, or a related life science field (or close to completion)

Experience with:

RNA sequencing library preparation

iPSC culture and neural differentiation

CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing

Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team

Desirable:

Experience in bioinformatics or transcriptome data analysis

Background in ALS or neurodegeneration research
