About the Department

The Research Department of Behavioural Science and Health investigates how human behaviour shapes health outcomes across the life course. Our work spans multiple public health priorities, including mental health, cardiovascular disease, cancer prevention, substance use, and obesity. By combining epidemiology, statistics, behavioural science, and policy-relevant research, the department aims to generate evidence that informs population-level interventions and improves wellbeing.

This post sits within Professor Daisy Fancourt’s Social Biobehavioural Research Group, an internationally recognised team examining how social behaviours and environments influence physical and mental health. Research themes include loneliness and social isolation, cultural and community engagement, nature exposure, and social prescribing.

The Opportunity

We are recruiting a Research Fellow in Epidemiology and Statistics to contribute to GRACE-Epi, a £3.5 million Wellcome Trust Discovery Award exploring the relationship between arts and cultural engagement and healthy ageing at a global scale.

This role offers a unique opportunity to work on one of the world’s largest interdisciplinary studies linking social participation, health behaviours, and ageing outcomes using advanced epidemiological methods and large-scale longitudinal data.

Key Responsibilities

As a Research Fellow, you will:

  • Manage, clean, harmonise, and document complex international datasets
  • Conduct longitudinal and causal statistical analyses using cohort data
  • Apply advanced epidemiological and statistical techniques to address research questions on ageing and health
  • Contribute to peer-reviewed publications and research dissemination
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary researchers across behavioural science, public health, and policy
  • Support reporting requirements for a major externally funded research programme
  • Your work will align with national and international public health research priorities, including those outlined by the UK government
  • Contract and Appointment Details
  • The post is externally funded until 1 March 2031
  • Appointment at Grade 7 requires a completed PhD
  • Candidates without a PhD at the point of appointment will be appointed at Grade 6B, with automatic backdating to Grade 7 upon successful PhD submission (no corrections)

About Yo

Essential Criteria

You will be a highly motivated researcher with:

  • A PhD (or near completion) in epidemiology, statistics, medical statistics, quantitative social science, or a related discipline
  • Experience analysing large-scale cohort or population datasets
  • Strong expertise in longitudinal and causal inference methods
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • The ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines independently
  • Experience working in interdisciplinary or public-health-focused research environments will be an advantage.
