About the Department
The Research Department of Behavioural Science and Health at UCL investigates how human behaviour shapes health, wellbeing, and disease outcomes. Its work spans a wide range of public health challenges, including cardiovascular disease, cancer, obesity, alcohol and tobacco use, and mental health. The department is known for its interdisciplinary approach, bringing together epidemiology, psychology, statistics, and social science to inform evidence-based public health policy.
About the Research Group
This post is based within Professor Daisy Fancourt’s Social Biobehavioural Research Group, an internationally recognised team examining how social experiences influence physical and mental health across the life course.
The group’s research explores both:
- Social risk factors, such as loneliness, isolation, and population-level disruptions (e.g. COVID-19 lockdowns), and
- Protective social assets, including community engagement, arts and cultural participation, nature engagement, and social prescribing.
- This work contributes directly to UK and global public health priorities, including those set out in national prevention and healthy ageing strategies
About the Role
The Research Fellow will join a major £3.5 million Wellcome Trust Discovery Award project known as GRACE-Epi, which investigates the relationship between arts and cultural engagement and healthy ageing using large-scale epidemiological data from across the world.
The post-holder will play a key role in managing and analysing complex longitudinal datasets, applying advanced statistical and causal inference methods to address research questions with direct relevance to population health and ageing policy.
This role offers the opportunity to contribute to internationally visible research that aligns with UK priorities on healthy ageing, prevention, and evidence-based public health
Key Responsibilities
- Manage, clean, and harmonise large-scale cohort and population datasets
- Conduct longitudinal and causal statistical analyses
- Apply advanced epidemiological and statistical methods to real-world health data
- Contribute to high-quality peer-reviewed publications and reports
- Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary research team
- Support the delivery of project milestones and funder reporting
- Communicate findings clearly to academic, policy, and non-academic audiences
- Ensure research complies with UK research governance and data standards
About You
Essential Criteria
You will be a highly motivated researcher with:
- A PhD (or near completion) in statistics, medical statistics, epidemiology, quantitative social science, or a closely related discipline
- Strong experience analysing cohort or population-based data
- Expertise in advanced longitudinal and causal statistical methods
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- A proven ability to manage workloads and meet deadlines
Additional Appointment Information
- Appointment at Grade 7 is dependent on award of PhD
- Candidates without a completed PhD will be appointed at Grade 6B (£39,148 – £41,833)
- Salary will be backdated to Grade 7 (£45,103 – £52,586) upon successful PhD submission (no corrections required)
Contract and Funding
- This is a fixed-term post funded until 1 March 2031 in the first instance, subject to continued external funding.
- Employment will be under UCL Terms and Conditions of Service for Research and Professional Services Staff
