Job Description

Postdoctoral Researcher (Research Associate) in Quantum Cryptography and Hardware Security

The School of Informatics at the University of Edinburgh is inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher (Research Associate) in the fields of quantum cryptography, cryptanalysis, hardware security, and quantum hardware modules. This position is part of the QuantERA project “Hardware Security Module for Secure Delegated Quantum Cloud Computing” (HSM-QCC), aimed at developing a trusted execution module to secure quantum computing in cloud environments. The project involves a consortium of several European universities and industry partners, and the University of Edinburgh team, led by Dr. Myrto Arapinis and Dr. Mina Doosti, will focus on protocol design and security analysis.

The role is based in the Quantum Software Lab (QSL), which collaborates with the National Quantum Computing Centre (NQCC). QSL is a leading hub for theoretical quantum research in the UK, with around 50 core members, including staff under the leadership of Prof. Elham Kashefi, Personal Chair in Quantum Computing.

We strongly encourage applications from female researchers, individuals from minority ethnic groups, first-generation academics, and those from underrepresented groups in academia. We also welcome applications from individuals with non-traditional career paths, including those who have had career breaks for family, health, or caring responsibilities, or who have transitioned into academia from other sectors.

Position Details:

Full-time (35 hours per week)

Fixed term for 18 months (with potential extension subject to additional funding)

Salary: £40,247 to £47,874 per annum (UE07)

The successful candidate will contribute to the HSM-QCC project, working with partners such as University of Twente (NL), University of Sorbonne (FR), Eötvös Loránd University (HU), and industry partners including Quixquantum, Veriqloud, and Thales France. Research responsibilities may include:

  • Developing quantum hardware-based primitives that are secure and efficient for small to medium-scale quantum devices.
  • Conducting security analysis of existing quantum HSMs and resources.
  • Designing practical and quantum-secure protocols for multi-party verifiable quantum computing.

You will engage with collaborators, attend consortium meetings, and take part in communication and reporting activities, all within an international research setting.

At QSL, you’ll work in an active and collaborative environment, interacting with researchers, industry professionals, and application engineers.

Essential Qualifications and Skills:

  • PhD (or near completion) in Physics, Computer Science, Mathematics, or related fields.
  • Strong background in quantum cryptography, security analysis, and quantum information.
  • Expertise in techniques required for research in these areas.
  • Proven research performance and quality of work.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, for presenting complex information.

Desirable Qualifications and Skills:

  • Experience working in collaborative research networks with multiple partners.
  • Experience collaborating with experimental researchers, particularly in quantum optics.
  • Track record of first-author and collaborative publications in high-quality journals or conferences related to quantum computing.
  • Proven ability to conduct independent research within an interdisciplinary team and to contribute original research.
