The Role
Aberystwyth University is seeking a Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN) to support the teaching and development of veterinary nursing within our growing School of Veterinary Science.
You will play a key role in developing the clinical skills teaching facilities, preparing resources, and delivering practical training based on the RCVS Day One Skills for Veterinary Nurses. Working closely with the Programme Lead, academic staff, and clinical technicians, you will help ensure students receive high-quality, hands-on learning in our Veterinary Education Centre (VEC) and Veterinary Training Clinic (VTC).
This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the first veterinary nursing degree provision in Wales and help shape Aberystwyth as a centre of excellence for veterinary education and research.
Key Responsibilities
Develop and maintain the clinical learning areas for the FdSc Veterinary Nursing programme.
Manage and organize consumables, equipment, and booking systems for the skills areas.
Ensure equipment is maintained, serviced, and safe for use.
Deliver and support teaching of RCVS Day One Skills to veterinary nursing students.
Train students and staff in the safe use of specialized equipment (including X-ray machines).
Oversee animal welfare in practical teaching sessions.
Develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all skills and equipment.
Assist in the delivery and assessment of Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs).
Liaise with Animal Sciences Technicians to maintain teaching materials for dissection and practical work.
Support research activities linked to veterinary nursing.
Ensure high standards of infection control within teaching facilities.
Maintain risk assessments and provide regular usage reports for VEC/VTC.
Participate in off-site teaching, farm visits, and field trips.
Contribute to university-wide projects, open days, graduations, and other key events.
Commit to CPD, health and safety responsibilities, and environmental sustainability practices.
Abide by the RCVS Code of Professional Conduct at all times.
About You
Essential:
Registered Veterinary Nurse (RCVS).
At least 1 year’s experience in veterinary practice.
Strong knowledge of RCVS Day One Skills, Day One Competences, and Professional Behaviors.
Excellent organizational, teamwork, and communication skills.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
Flexible and adaptable to day-to-day changes.
Valid UK driving licence.
Awareness of working in a bilingual environment (Welsh/English).
Desirable:
Experience teaching or supervising students on RCVS Day One Skills.
Experience developing SOPs.
Degree-level or postgraduate qualification.
Interest in veterinary nursing education.
Oral and written Welsh (Level B1 or above).
