Junior Sister/Charge Nurse – Ophthalmology Outpatient Department
Fixed-Term Contract
We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Band 6 Junior Sister/Charge Nurse to join our busy and supportive Ophthalmology Outpatient Department. The department is responsible for delivering outpatient clinics with ophthalmologists and specialist ophthalmic services, running Monday to Friday from 8 am to 6 pm.

Key Responsibilities:
- Deputise for the Senior Sister in their absence, providing leadership and support to the team.
- Manage and allocate the roster system, ensuring appropriate staffing levels and effective management of sickness and absence.
- Oversee daily staff allocations, running the Nurse in Charge desk and triaging ophthalmology referrals until 5 pm.
- If ophthalmology trained, participate in clinical duties when not in the Nurse in Charge role. If not trained in ophthalmology, support the department through other clinical duties as required.
- Lead, mentor, and support both qualified and unqualified staff, fostering a positive team culture.
- Participate in quality assurance and quality improvement initiatives, including clinical audits and presenting findings.
- Support the ongoing development of the department and contribute innovative ideas for continuous improvement.
Essential Qualifications and Experience:
- Registered Adult Nurse on the NMC register.
- Substantial post-registration experience in a complex healthcare or acute NHS care setting, with supervisory or mentoring experience.
- Evidence of professional/clinical knowledge supplemented by specialist clinical or managerial training.
- Ability to act as a practice-based supervisor/assessor in line with NMC standards for student supervision and assessment.
- Proven experience of leading and coordinating shifts, managing resources, and supporting the development of junior staff.
- Experience in managing incidents, complaints, and implementing changes in practice.
- Strong leadership skills, including team building, clinical governance, and change management.
Desirable:
- 2-4 years of experience as a Band 6 Nurse.
- Ophthalmology training or a keen interest in ophthalmology.
- Experience with Allocate Roster Systems (especially for internal applicants from UHB Trust).
- Continued professional development (CPD) related to leadership training.
