The Opportunity

Brighton & Sussex Medical School (BSMS) invites applications from experienced, practicing General Practitioners for a senior clinical academic appointment at Associate Professor or Professor level. This is a pivotal role within the Department of Primary Care & Public Health, designed to strengthen leadership in research, education and clinical engagement within general practice.

This appointment offers a rare opportunity to shape the future of undergraduate and postgraduate medical education while leading impactful, patient-focused research that responds to national and regional health priorities.

Your Role and Impact

As a senior clinical academic, you will provide strategic leadership across teaching, research and clinical practice. You will be expected to influence the academic direction of general practice within BSMS while maintaining an active clinical role in the NHS.

Key elements of the role include:

  • Leading an independent and externally funded programme of research within primary care
  • Contributing to research leadership across BSMS and supporting GP colleagues to engage with research activity
  • Delivering and shaping research-led undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in general practice
  • Playing a central role in curriculum development and ensuring high-quality student placements
  • Building strong partnerships with NHS organisations, regional training bodies and research networks
  • Your work will align with national health and research priorities, including those supported by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR)

Research Leadership

We particularly welcome applicants whose research aligns with BSMS strengths, including:

  • Global health and infectious disease
  • Cancer
  • Mental health
  • Health inequalities and population health
  • Prevention and public health
  • The health of coastal and underserved communities
  • You will work closely with colleagues across the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) in Kent, Surrey and Sussex, supporting high-quality applied research in primary care settings.
  • Research activity will be conducted in line with UK governance and ethics frameworks

Teaching and Educational Leadership

You will take a leadership role in delivering and advancing general practice teaching across the BMBS curriculum, ensuring students experience general practice as a dynamic, intellectually rigorous and rewarding career.

At Professorial level, you will also:

  • Champion student-led general practice initiatives
  • Support GP engagement in teaching, placements and research supervision
  • Contribute to School-level leadership and strategic planning
  • Teaching practice will align with national expectations for medical education quality

Clinical Commitment

The successful candidate will be required to:

  • Maintain a 0.2 FTE role in a local GP practice
  • Hold an appropriate honorary NHS contract (e.g. NHS England or another relevant body)
