Role Summary What You’ll Do
As a senior academic and practicing GP, you will blend clinical, teaching, research, and leadership responsibilities. This includes:
- Leading an independent research programme — ideally aligned with BSMS research strengths such as global health/infection, cancer, mental health, health inequalities, population health/prevention, or health of coastal communities.
- Providing research leadership within the Department of Primary Care & Public Health; supervising students and colleagues; promoting research engagement across primary care and regional NHS networks (e.g. NIHR Applied Research Collaboration in Kent, Surrey & Sussex).
- Contributing significantly to the teaching of general practice across undergraduate (BMBS) and postgraduate programmes — helping shape the learning experience, supervise Student Selected Components, and support 4th‑year individual research projects.
- Engaging with external organisations to build strong links between medical education and GP practice; promoting careers in general practice among students; fostering placement opportunities and practice‑based teaching.
- At the professorial level: delivering nationally/internationally significant contributions to research, education and discipline leadership; fulfilling formal School‑level leadership roles and strategic planning duties.
- Maintaining a clinical GP practice role (~0.2 FTE) under an honorary contract with the relevant NHS body (e.g. NHS England) to retain active clinical engagement.

Who We’re Looking For Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will have:
A strong track record of research and academic leadership in general practice / primary care; ideally with interests aligned with BSMS strategic priorities (global health, cancer, mental health, health inequalities, community / coastal health, prevention/population health).
- Experience and enthusiasm for teaching undergraduates and postgraduates, supervising research, and contributing to curriculum and educational strategy.
- Commitment to clinical practice as a GP (able to hold a 0.2 FTE clinical commitment with an appropriate honorary contract).
- Leadership and management skills to contribute to the strategic development of the School, including external collaboration with health services, GP practices, and relevant stakeholders.
- A vision to build and sustain high‑quality academic output, shape future GPs, and support student career development in general practice.
Visa / Right-to‑Work & Sponsorship Important for International Applicants
If you are applying from outside the UK and need visa sponsorship, this role may qualify under the UK’s skilled worker visa regime — provided certain conditions are met according to UK immigration rules:
- The job must be in an eligible occupation, and the employer (in this case, the University) must be licensed by the UK Home Office to sponsor non‑UK nationals.
- The salary must meet the minimum threshold required by the visa route typically at least £41,700 per year or the “going rate” for the occupation, whichever is higher.
- From 22 July 2025, most sponsored roles must meet a certain skill level (graduate level / RQF 6 or above) to be eligible — which aligns well with this academic & consultant‑level post.
- The University will likely provide a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) if you are selected and meet requirements, but you must check eligibility (occupation code, salary, English‑language proficiency, etc.) before applying.
