The Opportunity
Brighton & Sussex Medical School (BSMS) invites applications from experienced, practicing General Practitioners to join the School as Clinical Associate Professor or Professor of General Practice.
This is a senior academic appointment for a clinician who combines excellence in general practice with a strong commitment to research, education, and academic leadership. The successful candidate will strengthen and extend BSMS’s research profile in primary care, while playing a leading role in shaping undergraduate and postgraduate education in general practice.
This appointment reflects BSMS’s commitment to research-led education, clinical relevance, and addressing the most pressing health challenges facing communities locally, nationally, and globally.
Your Role and Contribution
As a senior clinical academic, you will be expected to provide leadership across research, teaching, and service, contributing strategically to the direction of the School and University.
Research leadership
You will lead an independent and sustainable programme of research within the Department of Primary Care and Public Health. BSMS particularly welcomes candidates whose work aligns with existing strengths, including:
- Global health and infectious disease
- Cancer and mental health
- Health inequalities and population health
- Prevention and public health
- Health challenges facing coastal and underserved communities
You will contribute to departmental and School-level research leadership, support research engagement in primary care, and work closely with colleagues across the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) in Kent, Surrey and Sussex.
Teaching and educational leadership
You will play a prominent role in delivering and developing teaching in general practice across the BMBS curriculum, ensuring students experience high-quality, research-informed exposure to primary care.
This includes:
- Providing leadership in undergraduate teaching in general practice
- Supporting and expanding student placements, Student Selected Components, and Individual Research Projects
- Strengthening links with GP educators beyond BSMS
- Supporting student-led initiatives and career development in general practice
- At Professorial level, the role carries additional expectations for sustained excellence and national or international leadership in medical education.
Clinical practice
The postholder will maintain active clinical practice through a 0.2 FTE role in a local GP practice, supported by an appropriate honorary NHS contract. This ensures teaching and research remain grounded in contemporary general practice.

You are a practicing GP with a strong academic profile and a commitment to advancing general practice through research and education.
You will demonstrate:
- Eligibility for appointment at Associate Professor or Professor level
- An established or emerging independent research programme
- A strong publication and funding track record appropriate to career stage
- Leadership experience in teaching and curriculum development
- The ability to build productive partnerships across academic and clinical settings
For appointment at Professor level, you will also demonstrate sustained national or international impact, alongside leadership in research, education, and institutional service.
