This appointment will strengthen the School’s leadership in primary care research, education, and clinical engagement, while supporting its mission to address real-world health challenges through academic excellence.

This is a rare opportunity to shape the future of general practice education and research within a highly collaborative medical school that values impact, inclusion, and innovation.

The Role in Context

Senior clinical academic roles at BSMS carry responsibility beyond individual teaching and research. The successful candidate will provide visible academic leadership, contribute to strategic planning, and help guide the future direction of the School and its partnerships across the region.

You will maintain an active clinical role (0.2 FTE) in a local GP practice and hold an appropriate honorary contract with NHS England or another relevant NHS body, ensuring your academic work remains grounded in contemporary clinical practice.

Research Leadership

You will develop and lead your own programme of high-quality research within the Department of Primary Care & Public Health. We are particularly interested in candidates whose research aligns with BSMS priority areas, including:

Coastal and underserved communities

Working closely with colleagues across BSMS and the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) Kent, Surrey & Sussex, you will support and encourage wider engagement with research across primary care.

Teaching and Educational Leadership

You will play a key role in shaping and delivering general practice teaching across the undergraduate BMBS curriculum, ensuring students experience high-quality, research-informed learning throughout their studies.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Leading and developing general practice teaching across the curriculum
  • Supporting and expanding undergraduate placements in primary care
  • Encouraging GP engagement in teaching, Student Selected Components, and Individual Research Projects
  • Supporting student-led general practice initiatives and career development
  • Strengthening links between undergraduate and postgraduate medical education
  • At Professorial level, you will also contribute to formal School-level leadership, appropriate to your expertise and portfolio.

What We Are Looking For

You will be a practising GP with a strong commitment to academic medicine and medical education.

Essential attributes include:

  • GMC registration and eligibility to practise as a GP in the UK
  • An established or emerging independent research profile
  • Experience of teaching medical students and/or postgraduate learners
  • The ability to lead, inspire, and mentor colleagues
  • A collaborative approach to working across disciplines and organisations

For appointment at Professor level, candidates will demonstrate sustained national and international impact in research, education, and leadership.
