Durham University’s Department of Biosciences invites applications for the position of Associate Professor or Professor in the broad field of ecological modelling. This strategic appointment is supported by the Heritage360 initiative, a major interdisciplinary research programme funded by the university’s Strategic Research Fund. Heritage360 promotes integrated research across natural and cultural heritage, bringing together scholars from six departments: Archaeology, Biosciences, Chemistry, Geography, History, and Modern Languages & Cultures.

We are particularly interested in candidates whose ecological modelling research spans historical and future environmental scenarios, contributing to a deeper understanding of ecological systems across time. The successful candidate will be based within the Department of Biosciences—likely in a newly developed Computational Ecology workspace—and will play a key role in shaping the research agenda of the Heritage360 initiative.

About the Role:

Research-focused for the four-year duration of the Heritage360 programme.

Teaching duties will be limited and agreed upon with the Department and Strategic Research Fund leadership.

The role includes academic leadership, interdisciplinary collaboration, and external research funding acquisition.

The successful applicant will be expected to lead and develop internationally excellent research aligned with both ecological modelling and heritage studies.

About You:

You will bring a strong track record in ecological modelling, with experience applying these methods across different timescales.

You will have evidence of leadership in interdisciplinary research, and a proven ability to secure significant external funding.

You will demonstrate vision and innovation in developing new research directions that integrate ecology with heritage-related themes.

You will meet the academic and professional standards required for appointment as an Associate Professor or Professor in the Department of Biosciences.
