About UK Research & Innovation

UK Research & Innovation (UKRI) exists to create a thriving, inclusive research and innovation system that drives discovery, prosperity, and public benefit. From scientific infrastructure and advanced technologies to professional services and research partnerships, procurement plays a vital role in enabling this mission.

This is an opportunity to contribute directly to the UK’s world‑class research ecosystem by supporting the procurement activities that underpin nationally and internationally significant research programmes.

The Role

As a Procurement Officer, you will join an experienced and supportive commercial team working across a broad and varied portfolio. Your work will span research and development, professional services, data, technology, and specialist scientific equipment. You will support the full procurement lifecycle while ensuring compliance, value for money, and effective engagement with stakeholders.

This role is embedded within UKRI’s decentralised commercial model and supports activity across the Science & Technology Facilities Council (STFC), including the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory—one of the UK’s leading centres for scientific discovery and innovation.

What You’ll Be Doing

Working closely with Procurement Managers and Commercial Business Partners, you will:

  • Provide hands-on procurement support to researchers and business teams across a range of projects
  • Support sourcing, tendering, and contracting activities of varying value and complexity
  • Advise stakeholders on procurement regulations, governance, and internal controls
  • Promote UKRI procurement policies and public-sector best practice
  • Act as a first point of contact for procurement queries and escalate issues where appropriate
  • Help develop procurement and contract management capability within local teams
  • Ensure procurement activity delivers compliance, transparency, and value for money

What We’re Looking For

We’re seeking a confident, collaborative professional who enjoys working with diverse stakeholders and contributing to meaningful outcomes.

Essential Criteria:

  • Good general education and relevant qualifications
  • Strong customer focus with the ability to respond effectively to stakeholder needs
  • Clear, professional communication and interpersonal skills
  • Commercial awareness and an understanding of contractual terms and conditions
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel (experience with e‑sourcing tools is desirable)
  • Some experience in a commercial or procurement environment, or a strong interest in developing a procurement career
  • Willingness to work towards MCIPS accreditation

Why Join UKRI

UKRI values its people and is committed to creating an environment where employees can thrive.

Our benefits include:

  • Outstanding defined-benefit pension scheme
  • 30 days annual leave plus 10.5 public and privilege days (full-time equivalent)
  • Flexible and hybrid working arrangements
  • Employee assistance programme offering confidential advice and support
  • Discounts and offers across retail and leisure sectors
  • Ongoing learning, development, and wellbeing initiatives
