UCL Faculty of Engineering

The Department of Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering is one of the largest in the UK and hosts internationally-leading research groups across multiple sites. Its focus is on developing new technologies for disease diagnosis, treatment, and management using medical imaging, physiological monitoring, and implanted devices.

UCL Hawkes Institute

The Hawkes Institute is a multi-disciplinary research institute at the intersection of engineering and health, advancing healthcare technologies. It combines UCL’s Centre for Medical Image Computing (CMIC) and Wellcome/EPSRC Centre for Interventional and Surgical Sciences (WEISS) to maximise synergy across computational, engineering, and medical research.

OASIS Hub

The OASIS Hub is an EPSRC-funded programme led by UCL in collaboration with Cambridge and Imperial College London. Its goal is to develop low-cost, portable devices for cancer detection using optical, acoustic, and photoacoustic imaging. The Hub brings together academic, industry, and NHS partners to accelerate clinical translation, establish datasets, and enable less invasive interventions in the UK.

About the Role

Applications are invited for a Clinical Research Fellow to join the OASIS Hub project within the UCL Hawkes Institute and the Department of Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering. This EPSRC-funded role involves collaboration with UCL, Imperial College, and Cambridge. The successful applicant will hold a nodal 3 grade in a GMC-approved training scheme.

The role focuses on the clinical translation of novel optical, acoustic, and photoacoustic imaging devices for improved cancer detection. Responsibilities include:

Laboratory and pre-clinical evaluation in collaboration with engineering teams at Charles Bells House, Bloomsbury.

Translational evaluation using donated tissues and early-stage observational studies with consenting patients in HPB cancer surgery (liver/pancreas), Neurosurgery, and Paediatric Surgery.

Opportunities to collaborate with OASIS partners at Imperial College and Cambridge.

The position is funded for 36 months. The postholder will be “out of programme” from their medical training scheme. This role is eligible for a Skilled Worker visa or Global Talent visa under UK Visas and Immigration regulations. About You

The ideal candidate will:

Hold a medical degree and have completed basic surgical training.

Possess GMC registration or evidence of eligibility for full GMC registration.

Have experience in academic research and publication.

Demonstrate strong communication skills and willingness to contribute to public engagement activities.
