Role Overview

The Nuclear Medicine Imaging Assistant plays an essential supporting role in the delivery of safe, accurate, and compassionate Nuclear Medicine and PET-CT services across Barts Health NHS Trust. Working in a highly specialised and fast-paced clinical setting, you will help ensure that imaging sessions run smoothly and that patients feel informed, supported, and cared for throughout their visit.

You will work closely with a multidisciplinary team that includes Nuclear Medicine Technologists, Radiographers, Consultants, Nurses, Medical Physicists, Radiation Protection specialists, and administrative colleagues. Your contribution will directly support high-quality diagnostic imaging while upholding patient dignity, confidentiality, and safety at all times.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Care & Experience

  • Welcome, prepare, and escort patients through their imaging journey with professionalism and empathy.
  • Explain procedures clearly and reassuringly, adapting communication to individual patient needs.
  • Support patient comfort, cooperation, and safety during Nuclear Medicine and PET-CT examinations.

Clinical & Operational Support

  • Prepare injection rooms and scanning areas, ensuring cleanliness, readiness, and appropriate stock levels.
  • Assist with aseptic preparation of clinical trolleys in line with infection prevention standards.
  • Support daily quality control checks on imaging equipment and accurately record results.
  • Participate in radiation monitoring activities and follow departmental radiation safety procedures.
  • Manage radioactive waste, consumables, and stock organisation in accordance with regulations.

Administrative & Team Support

  • Accurately enter data using departmental IT systems and maintain clear, confidential records.
  • Work flexibly across Trust sites, responding positively to changing service demands.
  • Contribute to a collaborative team environment that reflects the Trust’s WeCare values.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential:

  • General education including English
  • GCSEs (minimum 5 grades A–C or equivalent)

Desirable:

  • NVQ or equivalent qualification in Health Studies

Experience

Essential:

  • Experience working within a healthcare environment
  • Basic understanding of imaging processes and confident computer/keyboard skills

Desirable:

  • Previous experience in a Nuclear Medicine setting
  • Familiarity with gamma cameras, PET-CT scanners, or handling radioactive materials

Skills & Abilities

  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities
  • Confident team-worker with excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to remain calm and professional in stressful or challenging situations
  • Accurate record-keeping and confident use of IT systems
