Summary of the Role
University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust is offering a 12-month fixed-term position for a Neonatal Fellow (Tier 2) to cover maternity leave. This post is ideal for doctors interested in neonatology who wish to work in a large teaching hospital with a strong reputation for training and research.
You will be based across the Royal Sussex County Hospital and Princess Royal Hospital, working as part of a supportive and dynamic neonatal team. The post involves participation in a full-shift rota covering intensive care, high dependency, and special care units, including long days and night shifts.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Duties:
Manage neonatal patients across intensive, high dependency, and special care settings.
Participate in the full shift Tier 2 rota.
Gain experience in advanced neonatal care and outpatient follow-up.
Assist with neonatal resuscitation and emergency procedures.
Counsel parents under consultant supervision for anticipated neonatal complications.
Contribute to safe neonatal transport and understand its principles.
Engage in departmental audits and quality improvement activities.
Education & Training:
This post is not part of a formal training programme but is educationally approved by the Deanery.
Fellows will work alongside trainees and have access to identical training opportunities.
Attend weekly academic activities such as:
Journal Club
Perinatal Morbidity and Mortality Meetings
Grand Rounds
Assigned an educational and clinical supervisor to support development.
Opportunities to develop teaching skills and deliver training to multidisciplinary teams.
Research:
The department has a strong regional reputation for research.
Fellows are encouraged to contribute to ongoing research projects or initiate new ones.
Essential Requirements
MBBS (or equivalent) medical degree
Full GMC registration with a licence to practice
MRCPCH
Neonatal Life Support (NLS) – Resuscitation Council UK certification
Minimum 1 year of Neonatal experience at Tier 1 level
Experience working in multi-professional teams
Evidence of participation in clinical audit
Strong communication and team-working skills
Desirable Criteria
Additional Tier 2 level neonatal experience
Advanced NICU procedural skills (e.g., intubation, central lines, chest drains)
Higher academic degree or published research
Teaching experience or qualification
Evidence of leadership or management training

Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS):
