Job Summary
We are offering an exciting opportunity for a Neonatal Fellow to join the Neonatal team at UHSussex on a 12-month fixed-term contract to cover maternity leave. This role is ideal for doctors with a strong interest in neonatology, particularly those seeking further experience in a busy, supportive, and well-established neonatal unit within a teaching hospital environment.
The successful applicant will work across both Royal Sussex County Hospital and Princess Royal Hospital, rotating through Intensive Care, High Dependency, and Special Care Baby Units. You will be part of the full shift Tier 2 rota and will receive equal access to training opportunities alongside trainees with National Training Numbers (NTNs).

Main Responsibilities
Clinical Duties:
Provide high-quality care to neonates across ICU, HDU, and SCBU.
Participate in a rolling full shift rota (long days, nights, weekends).
Perform neonatal procedures including intubation, central line placement, and chest drains.
Engage in neonatal outpatient care and parent counselling (under supervision).
Support neonatal resuscitation and transport, with supervision.
Work closely with consultants, junior doctors, nurses, and the wider multidisciplinary team.
Educational and Training Responsibilities:
Attend and contribute to Journal Clubs, Perinatal Morbidity & Mortality Meetings, and Grand Rounds.
Receive clinical and educational supervision with personalised development plans.
Participate in teaching sessions and deliver departmental presentations (e.g., Case Reviews, Journal Clubs).
Develop knowledge in paediatric imaging, neonatal transport, and outpatient management.
Research and Quality Improvement:
Participate in departmental research projects, audits, and quality improvement initiatives.
Support or lead research activities with guidance and mentorship from senior staff.
Person Specification
Essential Qualifications:
Basic medical degree (e.g., MBBS or equivalent)
MRCPCH
Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
Neonatal Life Support (NLS) certification (UK Resuscitation Council)
Desirable Qualifications:
Higher degree (e.g., MSc, MD, PhD)
Advanced Life Support or ARNI certification
Essential Experience and Skills:
Minimum 1 year of Neonatology experience at Tier 1 level
Ability to work effectively in multi-professional teams
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Evidence of audit involvement
Experience in managing neonatal inpatients and performing key NICU procedures
Desirable Experience:
Tier 2 Neonatology experience
Published research or academic achievements
Formal teaching qualification or evidence of teaching experience
Personal Attributes:
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Commitment to clinical excellence, service improvement, and continuing professional development
Demonstrated ability to manage workload under pressure
Other Requirements
Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is required for this role due to its responsibilities involving vulnerable individuals.
