Role Overview

University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust is seeking an experienced MRI & Ultrasound Physicist to join its established Radiology Physics team. This is a key clinical science role supporting safe, high-quality imaging services across UHNM and partner organisations throughout Staffordshire and Shropshire.

You will contribute specialist scientific expertise in non-ionising radiation imaging, supporting MRI and ultrasound services through quality assurance, optimisation, safety advice, and clinical problem-solving. This role is suited to a motivated HCPC-registered Clinical Scientist who enjoys collaborative working in a busy teaching hospital environment.

About the Service

The Radiology Physics section is part of UHNM’s wider Medical Physics Department, delivering scientific and technical support to acute and community healthcare providers. UHNM is one of the largest Trusts in England, operating across two main hospital sites and serving a population of approximately three million people.

The Trust works closely with Keele University and is an Imaging Academy hub for the West Midlands, offering strong links to education, training, and research. Royal Stoke University Hospital is conveniently located close to the M6, with easy access to Staffordshire, Shropshire, and the Peak District.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Scientific Support

  • Deliver specialist MRI and ultrasound physics services in a clinical environment
  • Provide expert advice on imaging quality, optimisation, and patient safety
  • Support acceptance testing, commissioning, and routine quality assurance of imaging systems
  • Contribute to risk assessments and safe system design for non-ionising radiation equipment

Governance, Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure imaging services comply with national legislation, professional standards, and local policies
  • Support incident investigations and contribute to service improvement initiatives
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation in line with clinical governance requirements

Education & Collaboration

  • Work closely with radiologists, radiographers, engineers, and clinical teams
  • Contribute to training and knowledge-sharing within the department
  • Support research, audit, and innovation where appropriate

Essential Requirements

Qualifications & Registration

  • HCPC registration as a Clinical Scientist
  • Registration in Imaging with Non-Ionising Radiation (MRI & Ultrasound)
  • First or upper-second class honours degree (1st or 2:1) in Physics or a closely related discipline
  • Postgraduate MSc in Medical Physics (or equivalent)
  • Completion of the Healthcare Scientist Training Programme (STP) in Imaging with Non-Ionising Radiation

Experience

Desirable Criteria

  • First-class honours degree in Physics
  • PhD in a medical or physical science discipline
