About the Role
We are seeking a capable, organised, and people-focused Medical Secretary to join the secretarial team at Sussex Eye Hospital. This is a key supporting role within a busy clinical environment, where your work directly contributes to patient care, communication, and the smooth running of outpatient and consultant services.
You will work closely with fellow medical secretaries, consultants, doctors, and wider NHS colleagues to ensure accurate, timely, and professional administrative support. What You’ll Be Doing
- Provide comprehensive secretarial support to consultants and clinical teams
- Accurately audio-type clinical correspondence including letters, referrals, and reports
- Manage competing priorities to meet strict deadlines while maintaining attention to detail
- Communicate professionally with patients, relatives, and NHS colleagues via phone, email, and face to face
- Maintain and update patient records using clinical systems
- Support the wider secretarial team to ensure continuity of service
What We’re Looking For
You will bring strong organisational skills and a calm, methodical approach, alongside:
- At least 2 years’ experience in an administrative or secretarial role (medical experience desirable but not essential)
- Excellent written and spoken English
- Strong IT skills, including confident keyboard use and document formatting
- Ability to prioritise workload and work to deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- A professional, empathetic telephone manner
- Willingness to learn medical terminology and NHS systems (training provided)
Experience within a hospital or healthcare setting is advantageous, but we welcome applications from candidates with transferable skills who are motivated to work in healthcare.
