About the Department
The Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Reading is a dynamic, research-active academic community with a strong commitment to excellence in teaching, scholarship, and public engagement. We are seeking to appoint two Lecturers in International Relations to strengthen our expertise in international security and contemporary global challenges.
The Opportunity
- We invite applications for two permanent Teaching and Research posts:
- Post 1: Contemporary war and conflict
- Post 2: International security
We are particularly interested in scholars whose work explores the evolving nature of warfare, global security orders, and emerging threats such as cybersecurity, climate and environmental security, technological change, and new forms of conflict. Applicants from a wide range of theoretical, methodological, and interdisciplinary perspectives are warmly encouraged.
Research Expectations
Successful candidates will demonstrate a clear and ambitious research agenda in International Security or International Relations, with the potential to produce high-quality research outputs suitable for submission to the Research Excellence Framework (REF).
We value research that engages with real-world policy debates and generates impact beyond academia. Experience of securing, or the clear potential to secure, external research funding will be viewed positively.
Teaching & Academic Contribution
You will contribute to core undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in International Relations and International Security, alongside offering research-led teaching aligned to your specialist expertise.
You will also be expected to:
- Contribute to teaching in areas such as war and conflict, global security, strategy, and contemporary warfare
- Play an active role in the Centre for Global Security and Governance
- Support student development through supervision and academic advising
- Contribute to recruitment, outreach, and departmental administration
