About the Opportunity
The Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Reading is seeking to appoint two permanent Lecturers in International Relations to join a growing, research-active academic community.
These appointments strengthen the Department’s focus on International Security and Global Politics. One role will focus on contemporary war and conflict, while the second will focus on international security more broadly. Both posts offer the opportunity to shape cutting-edge research and deliver inspiring, research-led teaching.
We are keen to hear from scholars whose work addresses pressing global challenges and contributes to debates around security, conflict, and global order.
Research Focus
We welcome applications from candidates using a wide range of theoretical, methodological, and interdisciplinary approaches. Areas of interest include (but are not limited to):
- Contemporary war and conflict
- The changing character of warfare and strategy
- International and global security
Emerging security challenges, such as:
- New and disruptive technologies
- Climate change and environmental security
- Cybersecurity and digital conflict
Applicants should demonstrate an ambitious and original research agenda capable of producing high-quality outputs for the Research Excellence Framework (REF). Policy-relevant research with clear pathways to impact is particularly encouraged. Experience of securing, or clear potential to secure, external research funding will be viewed positively.
Teaching & Academic Contribution
Successful candidates will:
- Contribute to core teaching in International Relations and International Security
- Deliver specialist, research-led teaching aligned with their expertise
- Support undergraduate and postgraduate students through teaching and supervision
- Play an active role in the Department’s Centre for Global Security and Governance
- Contribute to student recruitment, academic administration, and departmental life
- Experience teaching subjects such as international relations, global security, war and conflict, or contemporary warfare and strategy will be an advantage.
About You
You will be well suited to these roles if you can demonstrate:
- A PhD (completed or near completion) in International Relations, Politics, or a related discipline
- A developing or established record of high-quality research publications
- Clear potential to contribute to a strong REF submission
- The ability to design and deliver engaging, inclusive, research-led teaching
- A collaborative approach to academic citizenship and student support
