About the Role
We are seeking a Lecturer in Energy Data Analytics and Sustainability to strengthen our teaching and research at the intersection of data science, artificial intelligence, and the energy transition.
This role is ideal for an academic with strong expertise in machine learning, advanced data analytics, and AI-driven modelling, who is motivated by interdisciplinary collaboration and societal impact. You will contribute to both education and research leadership, helping to shape the next generation of professionals tackling climate change and energy system transformation.
Alongside teaching and research, the postholder will take on a Deputy Director role within the MSc Energy Systems and Data Analytics (ESDA) programme, contributing to its academic leadership and strategic development.
Key Responsibilities
Teaching and Education
- Deliver and coordinate teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, including:
- MSc programmes in Energy Systems and Data Analytics and Sustainable Built Environments
- BSc and MEng programmes in Energy and Resources
- Lead the teaching of two core modules (or equivalent), with scope to contribute to additional modules
- Develop research-led learning in line with UCL’s Connected Curriculum principles
- Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate research projects
- Act as a personal tutor for both undergraduate and postgraduate students
- Design, set, mark, and assess coursework and examinations, providing timely and constructive feedback
Research and Academic Leadership
Build and sustain an internationally recognised research portfolio in:
Energy data analytics
- Machine learning and AI applications for energy, buildings, or transport systems
- Publish high-quality research outputs and pursue external research funding
- Collaborate across disciplines within UCL and with external partners
- Contribute to academic leadership, programme development, and wider institutional roles
About You
You will bring a strong academic and research profile, alongside a passion for teaching and collaboration.
Essential Criteria
- A PhD in a quantitative discipline (e.g. data science, engineering, physics, mathematics, computer science, or related field)
- A doctoral thesis directly relevant to energy systems, sustainability, or the energy transition
Advanced expertise in:
- Supervised and unsupervised machine learning
- Deep learning and optimisation
- Energy or infrastructure data modelling
Demonstrated research experience in areas such as:
Time-series forecasting
- Reinforcement learning for smart grids or energy optimisation
- Causal inference for policy or system evaluation
- Experience or clear potential in research-led teaching in data analytics and advanced ML methods
