About the Role
The UCL Energy Institute is seeking to appoint a Lecturer in Data Analytics and Sustainability with strong expertise in machine learning, artificial intelligence, and advanced data analytics applied to the energy sector.
This role combines research, teaching, and academic leadership, with a particular focus on supporting the energy transition through data-driven approaches. The successful candidate will contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate programmers while building a high-quality research portfolio aligned with sustainability, energy systems, and digital innovation.
In addition to teaching core modules, the postholder will play a leadership role within the MSc Energy Systems and Data Analytics (ESDA) programme, serving as Deputy Programme Director.
Key Responsibilities
Teaching and Education
Deliver and coordinate teaching across BSc, MEng, and MSc programmes, including:
- Energy Systems and Data Analytics
- Sustainable Built Environments
- Energy and Resources
- Design and teach core modules in data analytics, machine learning, and AI
- Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations and projects
- Act as personal tutor to students at different stages of study
- Develop research-led teaching in line with UCL’s Connected Curriculum
- Set, mark, and assess coursework and examinations, providing constructive feedback
Research and Academic Leadership
- Develop an independent and collaborative research portfolio in energy data analytics
- Publish high-quality research and seek external research funding
- Contribute to interdisciplinary research across energy, transport, buildings, and policy
- Support programme leadership and contribute to departmental and institutional service
Person Specification
Essential Criteria
- PhD (or near completion) in a quantitative discipline such as data science, engineering, applied mathematics, or computer science
- Doctoral research directly relevant to energy systems, sustainability, or the energy transition
Strong expertise in:
- Supervised and unsupervised machine learning
- Deep learning and optimisation techniques
- Energy, transport, or building data modelling
Research experience in areas such as:
- Time-series forecasting
- Reinforcement learning for smart grids or energy optimisation
- Causal inference and policy evaluation
- Demonstrated ability to teach complex analytical methods effectively
- Commitment to inclusive teaching and supporting diverse student cohorts
