Job Description

About the UCL Energy Institute

The UCL Energy Institute is dedicated to supporting the transition to a globally sustainable energy system. Our work integrates disciplines ranging from data analytics and engineering to environmental economics and public policy. Through cutting-edge research, innovative education, and strong partnerships with industry and government, we aim to deliver real-world impact while equipping graduates for leadership roles across academia, industry, and policymaking.

As part of The Bartlett, UCL’s global faculty of the built environment, the Institute fosters interdisciplinary collaboration and impact-driven research at the intersection of energy systems, sustainability, and data science.

The Role

We are seeking to appoint a Lecturer in Data Analytics and Sustainability with a strong focus on advanced data analytics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence applied to energy systems. This role is ideal for an academic who combines deep technical expertise with a strong commitment to sustainability, the energy transition, and interdisciplinary teaching and research.

The postholder will contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching across programmes including Energy Systems and Data Analytics (MSc), Sustainable Built Environments, and Energy and Resources (BSc/MEng). The role also includes programme leadership responsibilities, with the postholder serving as Deputy Director of the MSc in Energy Systems and Data Analytics (ESDA).

Alongside teaching, the Lecturer will build an independent, externally funded research portfolio aligned with the Institute’s mission and UCL’s Connected Curriculum, embedding research-led education throughout their teaching practice.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

  • Deliver high-quality teaching on core and optional modules in data analytics, machine learning, and AI for energy and sustainability.
  • Contribute to curriculum development across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
  • Provide academic leadership as Deputy Director of the MSc Energy Systems and Data Analytics programme.
  • Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate research projects and dissertations.
  • Act as a personal tutor to undergraduate and postgraduate students.
  • Develop research-led teaching approaches aligned with UCL’s Connected Curriculum framework.
  • Design, assess, and provide feedback on coursework and examinations.
  • Establish a strong research profile in energy data analytics and sustainability, including publication and funding activity.
  • Contribute to academic citizenship and institutional service within the department and wider university.

About You

Applicants will typically demonstrate:

  • A PhD in a quantitative discipline (such as data science, engineering, physics, computer science, or applied mathematics) with a thesis directly relevant to energy systems, sustainability, and the energy transition.
  • Strong expertise in advanced data analytics, including supervised and unsupervised machine learning, deep learning, and optimisation.
  • Research experience applying machine learning and AI to energy, transport, or building systems, including areas such as time-series forecasting, reinforcement learning for smart grids, energy system optimisation, and causal inference for policy evaluation.
  • Evidence of, or strong potential for, high-quality research outputs and research funding.
  • Experience or clear potential in teaching data analytics and machine learning at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
  • A collaborative and inclusive approach to teaching, supervision, and academic service.
