Job Description

The Department of English Language and Applied Linguistics at University of Reading is inviting applications for a permanent full-time Lecturer in Applied Linguistics and Digital Media. The department has an internationally recognised reputation for excellence in Applied Linguistics, TESOL, Sociolinguistics, Psycholinguistics, Phonetics, and Language Assessment, and is now expanding its expertise in Digital Media and Communication.

The successful candidate will contribute to innovative teaching and research in digital communication, emerging technologies, and language education, particularly focusing on the communicative and pedagogical implications of Generative AI, digital discourse, TESOL, and professional communication.

The department is ranked among the top institutions globally for English Language studies and continues to deliver impactful, world-leading research and high-quality teaching.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver engaging teaching in Applied Linguistics, TESOL, Digital Media, and Communication at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
    Conduct internationally recognised research and publish in high-quality peer-reviewed journals.
    Develop research projects related to digital communication, emerging technologies, and Generative AI.
    Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations and research projects.
    Apply for external research funding and contribute to collaborative academic initiatives.
    Support curriculum innovation and departmental development activities.

Essential Requirements

Applicants should demonstrate:

  • A strong research profile with publications in reputable international journals.
    Teaching experience in Digital Media and Communication alongside Applied Linguistics and/or TESOL.
    Research expertise in digital communication, emerging technologies, and Generative AI applications in language and education.
    Experience supervising dissertations or academic research projects.
    Ability to secure or contribute to externally funded research projects.

Interview Information

Interviews are scheduled for 1 July 2026 and will include:

  • A teaching presentation
    A research presentation
    A formal interview panel
