About the Role

We are seeking a dedicated, enthusiastic, and motivated Junior Sister to join our Emergency Department (ED) at Hull Royal Infirmary. This is a dynamic, high-pressure environment within a large teaching hospital and regional trauma unit, seeing over 150,000 patients annually, including children and adults, and handling up to 140 ambulance arrivals per day.

This role provides a unique opportunity to develop both clinical and leadership skills, supporting the matron and senior nursing team to ensure high-quality, patient-focused care. You will rotate across all ED areas, including resuscitation, initial assessment, streaming, and emergency care, contributing to improving patient journeys and outcomes.

The department values innovation and continuous improvement, so you will also have opportunities to influence service delivery, participate in audits, and contribute to research and education.

Key Responsibilities

As a Junior Sister, you will:

• Provide senior nursing care, including assessment, planning, delivery, and evaluation of patient care
• Support matrons and senior nurses in managing the department efficiently
• Ensure patient safety, dignity, and compassion in a fast-paced and challenging environment
• Rotate through all ED areas, including resuscitation, streaming, and emergency care
• Participate in audits, research, and initiatives to improve care quality
• Support the training and mentoring of junior staff and students
• Contribute to team communication, health & safety compliance, and professional standards

Person Specification

Essential Qualifications & Registration

• Registered Nurse with up-to-date NMC registration
• ATNC qualification

Desirable Qualifications

• Management qualification or course
• Evidence of research or audit work
• Diploma or degree in nursing
• ALS or relevant teaching/assessing qualifications

Experience & Skills

Essential:

• Minimum three years’ experience at senior Band 5 level
• Evidence of professional development and clinical competency
• Ability to plan, assess, implement, and evaluate care in a fast-changing environment
• Strong interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence
• Knowledge of health & safety, evidence-based practice, and Essence of Care standards

Desirable:

• Experience managing skill mix and link roles
• Facilitating student learning or mentoring
• Up-to-date mentor or preceptorship skills
• Evidence of practice improvement initiatives
