The University of Reading’s unique “University within a Park” setting, which spans three beautiful campuses (Whiteknights, with its early 19th century planned landscape, London Road, with its formal gardens and ceremonial Great Hall, and Greenlands, Henley-on-Thames, with its riverside garden landscape), is an inspiring place to work.

With such a diverse mix of habitats, gardens, and other offsite sites, Reading’s Grounds Maintenance Team is constantly challenged with new grounds maintenance chores. In addition to managing and maintaining the grounds surrounding the academic teaching and research buildings, we look after a large variety of trees, meadows, forests, an extended lake, and the university SportsPark pitches.

The Grounds Operations Supervisor is a working role with an assigned maintenance area. The position will fill in for any Senior Gardener on the Team and the Deputy Head of Grounds as needed.

This position is primarily situated at Whiteknights Campus, although you will be expected to adjust to the core hours of other regions as needed. You’ll be:

  • Able to provide constructive leadership, teaching, and direction to team members, contractors, and others as needed.
  • Adaptable, capable of changing plans and taking control of other teams on short notice.
  • Abel will operate and demonstrate to other personnel a variety of grounds maintenance equipment and duties.
  • A champion of health and safety with verifiable experience and, ideally, an IOSH level qualification
  • Able to organise and arrange grounds maintenance jobs.
  • Able to perform all lifting and manual chores connected with the profession.
  • Competent in basic office IT.

You’ll have:

  • An unrestricted UK valid driving licence that allows you to drive light vans.
  • GCSE or equivalent pass grade in English language.
  • A qualification in grounds maintenance or related subjects (NVQ level 2/3).
  • Previous experience maintaining a variety of amenity and biodiverse sites.
  • Previous experience supervising grounds maintenance teams.
  • A variety of NPTC/LANTRA certificates for machine and pesticide use competence
