JOB SUMMARY

 

The Senior Systems Engineer is in charge of advancing research computing technologies, software, storage, instrumentation, visualisation, and data analytics across the College of Science and Engineering’s research network. The post holder collaborates with stakeholders to ensure the dependability, security, and efficiency of Research Computing resources. Overseeing system design, lifecycle management, and modification to fit the needs of research projects while driving continuous improvement initiatives is one of the responsibilities. The Senior Systems Engineer’s primary responsibility is to manage and maintain the Research Computing Systems, which includes software library administration, user assistance, and development.

Main duties and responsibilities

1. Manage, monitor, and patch the HPC clusters to ensure the overall availability of the College’s HPC Infrastructure.

2. Provide expert assistance for research-based programmes that run on a variety of platforms, including commercial, open source, and custom tools and applications.

3. Work with the Principal Engineer to manage several complicated Research Computing/Cluster-based projects, ensuring timely and cost-effective delivery of cutting-edge research support.

4. Develop solid relationships with researchers to better understand their individual needs and expectations, and engage with them on a regular basis to obtain feedback, handle concerns, and assure satisfaction with IT services.

5. Gain an in-depth understanding of the subject-specific research requirements and software used by College researchers.

6. Manage HPC infrastructure development, including capacity planning and software upgrades, while maintaining security compliance and ongoing research activities.

7. Ensure service accessibility and compliance with appropriate legislation, respond to audit or compliance body recommendations, and effectively manage staff to support service delivery.

8. Act as a change agent, leading College and University IT projects, encouraging collaborative approaches, and advocating for the deployment of shared strategies such as Research Computing as a Service.

9. Any other duties or projects as assigned by the Line Manager or Head of College IT.

Knowledge, qualifications, skills, and experience.

Knowledge/Qualifications

Essential:

A1 Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to perform the duties of this level of post after acquiring the essential knowledge and skills in a similar role.

Or: Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 9 (Ordinary Degree, Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4), or equivalent (containing professional accreditation and necessary formal training), as well as personal development experience in a similar or related capacity.

A2 Strong technical understanding in a variety of IT disciplines, including Linux/Unix corporate server and storage technology.

A3 Thorough understanding of the computing requirements of researchers with a high degree of ability and a diverse variety of data processing needs.

A4 Extensive knowledge of the inner workings of a queuing system, such as slurm, SGE, or PBS.

A5 Expertise in scientific computing packages, installation, and operation, such as LAPACK, OpenMPI, and CUDA.

Desirable:

B1 Relevant professional credentials from reputable technical authorities, such as CompTIA Linux+ or RHCP.

Skills

Essential:

C1 Proficient with scripting languages such as Windows PowerShell and Linux shell scripts.

C2 Expert technical problem-solving skills developed over a significant amount of time working at greater levels of complexity and influence, and demonstrated promptly under pressure.

C3 Proficient in arranging and maintaining computing resources, including operating several systems concurrently and on time to meet deadlines.

C4 Has extensive experience with server maintenance and management, as well as applying updates to Linux server architecture.

C5 Excellent analytical skills with the confidence to challenge and continuously improve, delving into details as needed to comprehend issues (people, process, and technology).

C6 Demonstrates strong communication and interpersonal skills, as well as creative and inventive thinking and the ability to influence senior members of an organisation.

C7 Solid individual contributor who is very self-motivated, has good workload management abilities, and can engage with a larger team to promote the growth of junior workers.

C8 Ability to establish and maintain a broad network of commercial contacts while also understanding consumer habits, requirements, and expectations in order to foster a culture of trust and honesty.

C9 Establish explicit technical criteria to achieve goals, allocate work, provide feedback, and manage and inspire a team of specialists.

Desirable:

D1 Demonstrates the use of orchestration skills such as Ansible.

D2 Capable of demonstrating the use of containerisation technologies such as Docker.

D3 Capable of demonstrating knowledge in languages relevant to research computing, such as Julia.

D4: Python, C, C++, Fortran, R, or MATLAB.

Experience

Essential:

E1 Significant experience in a related technical IT role.

E2 Significant experience administering Linux/Unix in a complex, diverse environment.

E3 Proven experience accepting responsibility for acts that have a significant influence on the user community.

E4 Significant experience assisting users with standard research apps and compilers.

Desirable:

F1 Experience providing technical help at a university or educational institution.

F2 Research Support in an Academic Setting.

F3 Facilitating the handling and processing of big data sets.

F4 Experience with GDPR and the processing of personal and medical data, including imaging data.

Terms & Conditions.

The annual salary for Grade 7 will range between £39,347 and £44,263.

This position is full-time (35 hours per week) and open-ended (permanent).
