Inquest Manager – Legal Services Department
Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust, Truro

The Legal Services Department at Royal Cornwall Hospitals is a small, friendly, and supportive team, and we are currently seeking an experienced Inquest Manager to join us. This is an exciting opportunity for a dedicated and enthusiastic individual who can work both independently and as part of a team.

Position Details:

  • Location: Royal Cornwall Hospital, Truro
  • Hours: Full-time, Monday to Friday, 37.5 hours per week

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage in-house and collaborative inquest preparation, including case management, statement drafting, and attendance at inquests, working with Trust solicitors as required.
  • Research, identify, and gather all relevant evidence for inquests, using the Patient Administration System and other Information Technology resources.
  • Identify staff members across all groups who may possess important information or knowledge relevant to the inquest.
  • Use negotiation and mediation skills to engage with reluctant or unwilling witnesses, ensuring they contribute relevant information about the inquest.
  • Maintain the goodwill of witnesses throughout the inquest process, preventing them from becoming hostile and requiring formal court summons.
  • Conduct interviews, draft statements, and review prepared statements to ensure they are accurate and fit for purpose, as well as preparing witnesses for giving evidence.
  • Develop strong working relationships with the coroner’s office, police, and other involved parties to ensure the timely submission of statements, reports, and documents in line with coroner’s deadlines.

Required Qualifications & Experience:

  • Previous experience in inquest management or a similar legal setting.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • High attention to detail and the ability to manage complex cases.
