About the Team
The Information Management and Policy Services (IMPS) office sits within Legal Services and plays a vital role in ensuring the University meets its statutory responsibilities around information governance, data protection, and transparency.
Working collaboratively with colleagues across the University, the team provides expert guidance on compliance with information law while supporting good information-handling practice in a large and complex organisation.
The Role
We are looking for an experienced Information Compliance Officer to join our busy Information Compliance team on a fixed-term basis.
This is a varied and rewarding role, ideal for an information governance professional who enjoys problem-solving, advising stakeholders, and applying legislation in real-world contexts. You will handle a wide range of information rights and compliance matters, helping to protect both individuals and the institution.
Key Responsibilities
You will be responsible for:
- Managing and responding to requests under Freedom of Information and data protection legislation
- Handling subject access requests and correspondence from external regulators and agencies
- Supporting the investigation and management of reported information security incidents
- Providing clear, practical advice on data protection to staff and students
- Assisting the University’s Data Protection Officer with:
- Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs)
- Training and awareness activities
- Policy development, updates, and briefings
About You
You will be well suited to this role if you can demonstrate:
- A recognised professional qualification in information compliance (e.g. BCS/ISEB in FOI or Data Protection, or equivalent)
- Hands-on experience responding to Freedom of Information requests
- A strong working knowledge of data protection and information access legislation
- The ability to explain complex legal requirements in a clear and practical way
- Excellent organisational skills, discretion, and the ability to manage competing priorities
Working Arrangements
This role is primarily based at the Whiteknights Campus, with some on-site working required each week. Hybrid remote working will be supported at line manager discretion, subject to service needs.
Applications are welcome from external candidates and existing University staff. The post may also be considered on a secondment basis for internal applicants, subject to discussion with line management.
Visa & Right to Work Information
Due to the complexity of Skilled Worker visa eligibility criteria, applicants who may require sponsorship are encouraged to review relevant UK Government guidance before applying. The University cannot provide visa advice at application stage.
Helpful resources include:
- Right to work in the UK
- Skilled Worker visa guidance
- UK Visas and Immigration
- Data protection law (UK GDPR)
- Freedom of Information Act guidance
