About the role
We are looking for an experienced and confident Information Compliance Officer to join our Information Management and Policy Services (IMPS) team, based within Legal Services at the University of Reading.
This is a varied and meaningful role that sits at the heart of how the University manages information responsibly and lawfully. You will work closely with colleagues across academic and professional services, helping the University meet its obligations under data protection, freedom of information, and related legislation.
This position is offered as a fixed-term maternity cover until May 2027, with flexibility around working hours and hybrid working arrangements.
What you’ll be doing
As part of the Information Compliance team, you will:
- Manage and respond to Freedom of Information (FOI) and data protection requests
- Handle information requests from external bodies and regulatory agencies
- Support the investigation and management of information security incidents
- Provide clear, practical advice on data protection to staff and students
Assist the University Data Protection Officer with:
- Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs)
- Policy development and updates
- Training sessions and staff briefings

What we’re looking for
You’ll be well-suited to this role if you have:
- A professional qualification in information compliance
(e.g. BCS / ISEB Practitioner in FOI or Data Protection, or equivalent) - Hands-on experience handling Freedom of Information requests
- A solid working knowledge of UK data protection and FOI legislation
- The ability to explain complex legal requirements in a clear, practical way
- Excellent organisational skills and the confidence to manage competing priorities
- A high level of discretion and professionalism when handling sensitive information
- Experience within higher education or the public sector would be advantageous, but is not essential.
Working arrangements
- The role is primarily based at Whiteknights Campus, Reading
- Some on-campus working is required each week
- Hybrid and remote working will be considered, subject to service needs
- Flexible working patterns and part-time arrangements (from 0.8 FTE) are welcome
