Job Description

About the Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) to join our newly developed Onco-Toxicity and Immunotherapy Service (OTIS) within the Acute Oncology Nursing Team at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust.

This innovative role is designed to enhance patient care for individuals receiving immunotherapy and oncology treatments, particularly those experiencing acute or toxic side effects. The ACP will play a key role in improving patient flow, developing new same-day emergency care (SDEC) pathways, and reducing unnecessary hospital admissions by enabling ambulatory (same-day) care options for patients with treatment-related toxicities.

The post-holder will combine expert clinical practice, leadership, research, and education to ensure the highest standards of acute oncology care across the Trust. You will collaborate with the multidisciplinary team to lead service development, shape clinical pathways, and enhance the patient experience.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Leadership and Advanced Practice

Provide expert assessment, diagnosis, and management of patients with immunotherapy-related toxicities and other acute oncology presentations.

Develop, implement, and evaluate same-day emergency care (SDEC) pathways to prevent unnecessary hospital admissions.

Use advanced clinical judgment to support patient decision-making, ensuring safe and effective care.

Review all acute oncology SDEC admissions and ensure appropriate management plans are in place.

Act as a specialist resource, advising clinical staff on the investigation and treatment of oncology patients in emergency settings.

Collaborate with consultants, nurses, and allied health professionals to deliver seamless, patient-centred care.

Service Development and Improvement

Lead on the development of new oncology toxicity and immunotherapy service pathways across the Trust.

Drive innovation by identifying and implementing opportunities to improve the quality, efficiency, and safety of acute oncology care.

Work collaboratively with SDEC teams, cancer networks, and other departments to align service models and improve patient outcomes.

Translate national and local policies into effective clinical practice within the specialist field of acute oncology.

Develop, review, and implement specialist policies, protocols, and clinical guidelines.

Education, Training, and Mentorship

Support and mentor Acute Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) teams across all Trust sites.

Lead and coordinate professional development, education, and competency training for the wider multidisciplinary team (MDT).

Provide expert teaching, guidance, and support to nurses, AHPs, and ward teams to strengthen their knowledge and confidence in caring for patients with acute oncology needs.

Facilitate education sessions and reflective practice on complex case management.

Promote a culture of continuous learning and professional development.

Research, Audit, and Data Management

Initiate and lead research, audit, and service evaluation projects in the field of acute oncology and immunotherapy toxicity.

Develop and maintain robust data collection systems to support service improvement and clinical governance.

Use audit findings to inform evidence-based practice and drive service quality improvements.

Disseminate research outcomes and best practices across the Trust and wider oncology community.

Communication and Collaboration

Demonstrate advanced communication skills in managing complex or sensitive discussions with patients, families, and carers.

Provide clear and comprehensive written and verbal communication to all members of the MDT and external stakeholders.

Lead multidisciplinary meetings and discussions to support clinical decision-making and service coordination.

Act as a change agent, promoting the implementation of evidence-based practice and new models of care.

Represent the service in local and regional cancer network forums, contributing to the development of acute oncology strategy.
