Job Description

About the Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) to join our newly established Onco-Toxicity and Immunotherapy (OTIS) Service, part of the Acute Oncology Nursing Team at University Hospitals Sussex (UHSussex).

This innovative role is designed to enhance the efficiency of acute oncology admissions, with a focus on developing new pathways alongside the Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) teams. The ACP will help reduce unnecessary emergency department attendances by implementing ambulatory care pathways for patients experiencing immunotherapy-related toxicities, aiming to prevent hospital admissions where possible.

This is a highly specialist clinical position that combines service development, advanced practice, research, audit, and education. The ACP will demonstrate expert-level knowledge and clinical competence in managing patients receiving immuno-oncology (IO) treatments, ensuring safe and effective care delivery across multiple acute sites.

Key Responsibilities

Lead and develop new SDEC-based pathways to improve admission processes for acute oncology presentations.

Review all acute oncology SDEC admissions, supporting early assessment and intervention.

Use advanced clinical skills to assess, diagnose, and manage cancer patients with IO-related toxicities.

Collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams (MDTs), including oncologists, nurses, AHPs, and SDEC staff.

Provide specialist advice on the investigations and management of oncology patients during acute admissions.

Act as a change agent, implementing evidence-based practices and supporting the integration of national and local oncology policies.

Lead and contribute to service development, research, and audit within the IO/AO specialty.

Deliver education and mentorship to nurses, AHPs, and other healthcare professionals to enhance oncology expertise across wards.

Provide clinical leadership and support for the Acute Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) teams across all UHSussex sites.

Support robust data collection and analysis, ensuring accurate reporting and continuous improvement in service quality.

Engage with Cancer Networks to advance the complex acute oncology agenda regionally and nationally.
