About the Role

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Barts Heart Centre, a nationally recognised cardiovascular service bringing together leading experts to deliver world-class cardiac care for communities across North and East London.

As a Health Care Support Worker / Theatre Nursing Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting complex cardiac surgery, electrophysiology procedures, and emergency heart attack services within a state-of-the-art 10-theatre operating complex. This role is ideal for someone with existing theatre experience who is looking to develop further within a highly specialised surgical environment.

You will be supported to grow your skills through structured training, development programmes, and supervised hands-on experience within theatres.

What You’ll Be Doing

Working alongside Registered Theatre Practitioners, you will:

  • Support patients before, during, and after surgical procedures within operating theatres and associated clinical areas
  • Assist the theatre team in a non-scrubbed role, ensuring equipment, environments, and patients are prepared safely and efficiently
  • Anticipate patient and service needs to help ensure smooth theatre workflows
  • Maintain patient dignity, comfort, and confidentiality at all times
  • Safely use medical devices, equipment, and consumables in line with training and policy

Accurately handle and store patient information in accordance with data protection requirements

Person Specification

Essential Qualifications

  • NVQ Level 3 in Perioperative Care Support (or equivalent)
  • Level 2 Literacy and Numeracy (or equivalent)

Desirable

  • Infection prevention and control training

Experience & Knowledge

Essential

  • Experience working as part of a healthcare or theatre team
  • Prior experience in an operating theatre environment
  • Understanding of confidentiality and patient information handling
  • Knowledge of cross-infection prevention and health & safety responsibilities
  • Basic IT skills
